Music, Art and Drama
Music, Art and Drama play a large part in the children’s time here at Horton.
Music at Horton
The school fund music tuition for all of our pupils in Maple and Sycamore. In the lessons the children will be learning about the rudiments of music and singing new songs. In Sycamore they will be playing the glockenspiel and in Maple learning how to play the ukulele!
Maple class attend a concert with other schools across Staffordshire which is held at the Victoria Hall in Stoke on Trent.
Singing is also a big part of our music curriculum with daily singing during worship plus many concerts which the children love to participate in throughout the year. Many of these have been for the parents, guardians and grandparents to also enjoy. These include The Harvest Festival, a Nativity and Christingle at Christmas, an Easter Service which is held in church, Mother’s Day Service and an end of year production for key stage 2 to name just a few! The children love putting on these productions, it really helps our school unite and helps the children’s confidence grow. They are always inspiring, a pleasure to watch and be involved with. We are always very grateful to the pupils and staff for all of their hard work and dedication in putting on these productions and are immensely proud to be able to present them to the community.
Our MUSIC curriculum aims to create children who:
· develop musical confidence to perform individually and in a group
· through listening, enjoy and have an appreciation of a wide variety of musical genres, great composers and musical traditions and developments from a variety of cultures
· develop an understanding and appreciation of how music is created through the inter-related dimensions eg. pitch, dynamics, texture, tempo, timbre and structure
· can use and understand musical language and include musical features in their own compositions and improvisation
· understand the power of music in enabling people to express and influence emotions
· develop an understanding of music notation to play a variety of instruments.
Art at Horton
Within the art curriculum, we have carefully built upon core art skills and techniques from EYFS to LKS2 to consolidate children’s fine motor skills and allow them to develop as artists. The children are exposed to a variety of artists, sculptures, and designers to allow them to understand the development of art throughout history and to study a range of art and artists. We hope that all children can leave with an appreciation and enjoyment of art.
In line with the aims of the national curriculum’s expectations, we have developed an art curriculum that allows all pupils to experiment and create art inspired by the work of great artists and to reflect children’s own creativity. Key art skills such as drawing, painting, and printing have been carefully mapped out and differentiated throughout the whole school to build upon skills. Opportunities to evaluate and analyse others art and their own have been provided to allow children to form their own opinions on art. Children’s focus is drawn towards great artists, designers, and sculptures. Art vocabulary is used continuously and at an increasing standard as children move throughout the school to allow children to discuss art.
We hope that through our art curriculum children will leave Horton with the following:
- Be inspired by and have knowledge of a range of artists, designers and sculptures including their different styles of art
- Can effectively use a range of artistic skills to create their own pieces of art with an understanding of why they have selected certain techniques
- Be able to show their creativity and their visions through their art through experimenting with techniques, showing their lights shining as individuals
- Be able to talk about others and their own art using subject specific vocabulary such as pattern, shape, form and more and form their own opinions of art
- Evaluate and analyse artwork including others and their own
- Understand historical and cultural developments within art through learning about great artists
